It is that time of year again when we bring out the hot stones, warming blankets, fleece covers and turn on the Pumpkin smelling candles.

Hot Stone Massage is a technique that uses heated stones to relax sore aching muscles. Basalt rocks are generally used because of their heat retention. You can use the rocks as a heated tool alone or combined with essential oils in aromatherapy. It melts away tension, eases muscle stiffness and increases circulation and metabolism. An hour to hour 1/2 session promotes muscle relaxation through the placement of smooth, water-heated stones at key points on the body.

The premise behind hot stone massage therapy is that the direct heat of the stones relaxes muscles allowing the massage therapist access to their deeper muscle layers. It also expands blood vessels, which encourages blood flow throughout the body.  The heated stones have a sedative effect that can relieve chronic pain, reduce stress and promote deep relaxation.

Benefits of Hot Stone Massage

**Provides relief from pain associated with fibromyalgia, arthritis, carpel tunnel syndrome, and other chronic conditions

**Decreases pain and muscle spasms

**Reduces chronic stress and tension

**Increases flexibility in joints, aiding in easier mobility and movement

**Relieves pain and tension created by strained and contracted muscles

Tips and Techniques

**Heat the stones to 125 to 150 degrees in water in your 6 or 18 quart pro heater for at least 30 minutes to give adequate time to absorb and retain the necessary heat.

**Always clean and disinfect your stones. A soft brush or sponge can be used with a combination of water, baking soda and vinegar.

**Make sure your client is relaxed. Warm up parts of their body with either heat packs (Grampa’s Garden is a product we carry, as a heat pack) or warm towels. Make sure your client communicates through the massage so you are not applying too hot of stones, not hot enough or if it just doesn’t feel good to them. Pain is counterproductive with this technique. The key is a relaxing good experience.

**Drink plenty of water before the session, the heat may cause dehydration and the body needs fluids to help clean toxins released during the hot stone massage.

**Test the temperature of the stones

**When working on arms/legs you should always work from the outside in, forcing blood to the heart rather then away from it.

**Pregnant women should be treated ONLY with those trained in Hot Stone Pregnancy Massage.

**Do not work on those that are diabetic or have high blood pressure.

**If you notice areas effected by skin conditions or vericose veins do not massage this area.

**If your client is taking any pain medications they may not be able to sense the true heat of the stones which could result in burning of the skin.

Hot Stone massage has been around for over 2000 years by many different cultures around the world. It was incorporated into Ayurvedic medicine hundreds of years ago by Ancient Healers in India.
